openGrid Inbox

Wall-mounted paper, mail, and file inbox that hangs on an openGrid wall using openConnect slots cut into its back panel. Sized for US Letter, A4, or A5 sheets, with a perforated front panel that cuts print time and material. The pocket is a wedge. A tall back panel sits flat against the wall, a shorter front panel rakes outward so sheets lean back and stay readable, and tapering side panels close it in. A notch in the front edge lets you grab a whole stack at once instead of picking at the top sheet. It hangs on an openGrid wall through openConnect slots cut straight into the back panel โ€” there is no bracket and nothing to glue. The part drops down onto openConnect snaps already fitted to your grid, so gravity does the holding, and locking nubs in the corner slots keep it from lifting off by accident. Sizes Every plate is built around a sheet size, and the 28mm openGrid tile does the rest โ€” the panels snap to whole tiles so the openConnect slot grid reaches the panel edges with nothing left over. US Letter โ€” 224 ร— 89 ร— 224mm, a full 8 ร— 8 tile grid, 219.2mm pocket, 126mm of the sheet visible above the front panel A4 โ€” 224 ร— 91 ร— 224mm, 8 ร— 8 tiles, 219.2mm pocket, 134mm visible A5 โ€” 168 ร— 81 ร— 168mm, 6 ร— 6 tiles, 163.2mm pocket, 95mm visible US Letter and A4 come out the same width and the same height โ€” the tile snap absorbs the difference โ€” so either one holds both sheet sizes. What actually changes between them is how tall the front panel stands, and so how much of the page you can read at a glance. The pocket is 50mm deep at the floor, which is about a full ream of paper. Perforation The front and side panels are cut with a hex honeycomb by default. It takes roughly a quarter of the material out of the part โ€” 229cmยณ instead of 306cmยณ at US Letter โ€” and a good deal of the print time with it. A square lattice and a fully solid version are on their own plates if you prefer one of those. The back panel is always left solid โ€” it is what carries the mount. Holes never land on a corner or a seam. The 8mm border is measured not just from each panel's outer edges but from every joint the panel makes: the pocket floor, the neighbouring panels, the finger cutout, and the slot grid. Cells that would have been sliced into unprintably thin slivers along the side panels' taper are removed rather than left as fragments. What You Need An openGrid wall, board, or desk mount โ€” Full or Lite, either works A few openConnect snaps. This model has the slots, not the connectors โ€” print the snaps from mitufy's openConnect model, linked at the bottom. You only need one per grid position you actually want to use, not all 64. Customizing The .scad source is attached, so the MakerWorld customizer exposes the whole design: paper size (including Custom dimensions and a Landscape option), pocket depth, rake angle, panel heights and thicknesses, the finger cutout style, and every perforation and mount setting. One thing worth knowing if you open the file in OpenSCAD yourself: at the default 8 ร— 8 grid the back panel carries 64 openConnect slots, which is more than OpenSCAD's preview can flatten. F5 shows an empty preview and warns that CSG normalization was aborted. That is a limit in the preview pipeline, not a problem with the part โ€” F6 renders correctly , and so does every exported file and every plate in this download. Lowering Mount_Vertical_Grids, or setting Slot_Position to something sparser than "All", brings F5 back if you want it. What's in the Download One print profile carrying nine plates โ€” three paper sizes crossed with the three panel patterns. They are alternatives, not a set: pick the plate you want and print that one. Hex honeycomb โ€” the default, and the large tray in the photos US Letter โ€” 224 ร— 89 ร— 224mm A4 โ€” 224 ร— 91 ร— 224mm A5 โ€” 168 ร— 81 ร— 168mm Square lattice โ€” same shape and dimensions, straight-edged pattern US Letter, A4, A5 Solid โ€” no perforation anywhere, about a third more material and a longer print US Letter, A4, A5 Anything else โ€” a different sheet size, a deeper pocket, a shallower rake, a scalloped grab cutout instead of the notch โ€” comes out of the customizer. The small envelope tray in the photos is this same model with a custom sheet size, solid panels and the scallop cutout, and nothing else changed. Print Settings No supports required. Print it standing the way it hangs โ€” pocket floor on the bed, back panel upright โ€” which is how the plates are already laid out. The front panel leans outward only 12ยฐ from vertical, so it holds itself up, and no perforation cell spans more than 12mm. Standard settings work everywhere except the wall. The back panel is what carries a loaded inbox on the grid, so give it three walls rather than two; 15% infill is plenty for the rest. Check your build volume before you start. The US Letter and A4 plates are 224mm wide and stand 224mm tall , so they want a 256mm bed and roughly 230mm of Z. The A5 plates are 168 ร— 81mm and 168mm tall, which fits almost anything. If you customize the perforation, pick a Perforation_Wall_Thickness that is a whole number of extrusion widths. The 2mm default is five passes of a 0.4mm nozzle, which comes out as solid wall instead of a line and a sliver of gap fill. Files The download is a single Bambu Studio .3mf holding all nine plates โ€” open it, pick the plate you want, and slice that one. The OpenSCAD source is attached as a raw model file too, for anything the customizer doesn't reach. Mounting No assembly โ€” the inbox is a single-piece print. To hang it, fit openConnect snaps into the grid positions you want to use, then lower the inbox onto them. The slots are cut so the part slides down over the snaps, which means the load is carried by the grid rather than by the connectors' grip, and the locking nubs in the corner slots stop it lifting back off on its own. Take the weight into account when you choose how many positions to use. A loaded inbox is heavy, and the back panel offers a full 8 ร— 8 grid of slots precisely so you can spread that load over as many connectors as you like. Credits and License The pocket itself is my own design, licensed CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 : print it, remix it, share it โ€” with credit, under the same license, and not commercially. It is built on two things I did not design, and both are credited as remixed sources on this listing: openConnect , openGrid's own connector system, by mitufy โ€” licensed CC BY 4.0. Every slot in the back panel is generated by mitufy's openConnect connector library. openGrid , the 28mm modular grid system, by David D . This model depends on the openConnect connector library and nothing else from that project. That is deliberate: mitufy's holder, drawer, shelf, hook, label, and gadget generators are CC BY-SA, and none of this is derived from them.
