Overview
This is a modular snap-fit hinge designed specifically for 3D printed parts and CAD workflows.
The main goal of this model is to provide a ready-to-use hinge that you can directly import into your own designs, without having to design and test tolerances from scratch.
The hinge is designed to work reliably when printed on a well-calibrated FDM printer and does not require pins, screws, or post-processing.
Video tutorial
This hinge is explained and used in detail in the following video, where I design a full mechanical project step by step and show how this hinge works in a real application:

What’s included
This download contains two different types of files, each with a specific purpose:
1. STEP file – Hinge only
This is the main file.
You can import the STEP file directly into Fusion 360 (or any CAD software that supports STEP) and integrate the hinge into your own models exactly where you need it.
2. STL file – Small demo box with hinge
A simple printable box that uses the hinge, intended to:
Test print tolerances
See how the hinge assembles
Check the snap-fit behavior before using it in a real project
Hinge design and assembly
The hinge consists of two separate parts:
White part: the base hinge body with internal snap-fit grooves
Yellow part: the moving hinge part with two conical snap features
This is a non-through hinge design.
Instead of a continuous pin, the yellow part uses two conical features that snap into matching grooves inside the white part.
Assembly process:
Align the yellow part with the white part from the groove side
Press the hinge parts together using your fingers
You should feel and hear a click when the parts snap into place
Once assembled, the hinge rotates smoothly and remains securely locked.
No glue, no screws, no tools required.
Printing recommendations
Printing technology: FDM
Supports: Not required
Orientation: As provided in the STL
Material: PLA, PETG or similar
Printer calibration is important for correct snap-fit behavior
If your printer is properly calibrated, the hinge should snap together without excessive force.
How to use it in your own designs
Open your CAD software (Fusion 360 recommended)
Import the STEP file
Position the hinge where needed in your model
Combine or adapt it to your geometry
Print and assemble
The hinge is designed to be fully reusable across multiple projects.
Notes
This model is intended as a mechanical building block, not just a demo part
Feel free to adapt it, scale it, or integrate it into your own designs
If you remix or use it in a project, I’d love to see it
