I was looking to create a desktop fume extractor, but wanted a jet engine look. @CATIAV5FTW_1217083 's model had what I was looking for, though it needed some work to get it into something workable as an actual fan and not just a display model.
The fan sucks (and blows a lot of air). I'm afraid to spin it up too much, and have barely got to half speed on the controller. It's printed in PLA. It runs relatively quiet.
Besides the printed parts, you'll need:
- An A2212 3 phase BLDC motor with prop adapter. Stick to lower kV's. I used kV. Specifically this motor. It includes the prop adapter.
- An ESC or other suitable speed controller. I chose this one because it has the rotary control included.
- A 12 volt power supply. I used an 8 AMP version.
- Some hook-up wire, connectors, DC bulkhead connector, and a suitable switch.
- I also used M3 threaded inserts and screws for assembly.Â
Assembly is relatively straigh-forward, with the trickiest part being getting the motor leads fed through the front housing. The Fan needs to be attached to the motor shaft first, making the task more difficult than you would imagine - but it is possible.
I printed all the parts on a Creality K1-SE in PLA. Generally, 0.2mm layer height is fine, with some exceptions:
- I printed the fan at 0.1mm to get as much detail as possible. I think it also helps to make it run quieter, and potentially better balanced. I only used supports at the blade tips. The shaft hole will print without supports.
- The front and rear cover/housing was printed using adaptive layers to try and get a decent print time while also maintaining a decent look. Supports as needed on the "notch" running around the perimeter, and on the outer stationary blades of the front housing.
- The cone was printed at 0.1mm, no supports.
- The pylon and base printed at 0.2mm, no supports.
I've included my STEP files since your selected components may differ slightly, and for the culture :-)
(I've pulled this together fairly quickly. If I've missed an important detail, please leave a comment).
