This design uses a mix of 3D printed parts, various lengths of 5mm dowels and a few springs. Everything can be printed without support material (in PETG and PLA, at least) but brims may be required for some parts. Below is a list of all the non-printable parts:
- 5mm Metal Dowels - These can be purchased on Amazon or other websites in either kits with multiple sizes or packets of specific sizes. For this project you need:
- Required
- (1) 10mm x 5mm
- (2) 12mm x 5mm
- (5) 16mm x 5mm
- (1) 20mm x 5mm
- (4) 30mm x 5mm
- (3) 35mm x 5mm
- Handle (Required, but size can vary)
- (5) dowels required, 20mm x 5mm min, 35mm x 5mm max
- How to get dowels? Search “5mm metal dowels” on Amazon, or other wholesalers, and there are many options. You can buy kits with a variety of size, but I have not found a kit with every size needed for this project. The most efficient way that I know is to purchase the 2 items below:

- Springs
- I used ‘METALLIXITY’ springs. This is the product page:
- According to Amazon, the mechanical properties of the springs are:
- Outer Diameter: 4mm/0.16"; Wire Diameter: 0.3mm/0.01"; Free Height: 20mm/0.79"; Compressed Length: 12mm/0.47"; Load Capacity: 2N; Spring Rate: 0.25 N/mm
- I'm sure other springs would work, but I tested a few different types and most were a bit too strong, making it difficult to insert the key.
