Update: These worked like a dream for the 2023-2024 season. I'm looking forwards to using the exact same design again this year. I gave some out to skiers for Christmas last year and they were a hit.
There are quite a few passive glove dryer options, but none of them are designed for travel. Often, they're too bulky, don't nest at all, or nest poorly. This design is built from the ground up with travel in mind.
It was inspired by https://www.printables.com/model/357646-tapered-glove-and-shoe-dryer-remix. My model is a complete redesign from the ground up to be nestable for a travel-friendly dry glove option.
It works with different sizes, shown with:Â
- Men's XL
- Women's Medium
- Men's medium glove liner (Dakine Storm)
- Small
- Kids glove
These cones make a good Christmas gift for someone with an active outdoor lifestyle. Since they nest, you can fit enough for a family of 4 in a small box.
Printing tips
Â
- Use PETG for heat resistance (versus PLA)
- Disable brim (it is a pain to remove cleanly, and it prints well without it)
- 20mm layer height (higher layers mean less stringing with PETG)
- Add an extra perimeter for strength
- Arachne wall generator (may help remove gaps from thin walls)
- Calibrate your machine to your filament flow rate before printing
The geometry is easy, but the holes make for many hops, meaning stringing is the biggest issue, especially with PETG. I recommend the settings above. I also recommend a heat gun to knock down the strings. A deburr tool can help clean up any extra blobs along the seam (due to the stringing).
The print files are one solid color, but I added 2mm strips of white to add some decorative flair.
Changelog
December 5, 2023: Introduce Gen2 design. I've reworked the design from the ground up (again) to allow for more control. Gen2 differences:
- Thicker shell (1.5mm), so it is stronger.Â
- Taller (~187mm end-to-end height). This helps with holding taller gloves or mittens.
- More holes for more ventilation.
- The base diameter is reduced from 80mm to 75mm to make it easier to stash in smaller boots.
- Tolerance between cones when nested is increased to reduce sticking.
I've put the old files into a “gen1”  folder.Â
November 19, 2023: Wavy design not recommended. The wavy design works, but there are issues:
- The waves intersect with the top of the raindrops to effectively increase the angle, making printing in PETG harder.Â
- The wave pattern also means you cannot twist them while nested, making them hard to un-nest.
I recommend printing the original circular version instead.
November 12, 2023: Introduce the wavy variation. The idea is that the valleys should allow for less contact with the glove and more flow. This variation is uploaded but not printed/tested.
