Background
I don't know if this happens to you, but maybe? You work in a profession or an industry, and everyone in your family and your circle of friends believes that you now know every detail that could be nearly related to it. "Hey! You used to do something for wastewater treatment plants. You know, I have a problem with my toilet flush…"
Well, in my case, it's computers. After all, I'm a programmer and since I have a 3D-Printer... Uh... yes. A friend has been raving for days about getting himself a new computer, but no normal personal computer - no - one with LED lighting and fancy buttons. Contrary to all my advice, he then bought a gaming computer for way too much money, in a colorful and illuminated, stylish case.
But when he unpacked the PC, he almost had a stroke, after which he called me and almost told me in tears how terrible the world was and that this would always happen to him and all that couldn't be true. When I asked what happened, he told me that he didn't like the expansion card slots covers and asked if he could return the PC.... True Story - In a seizure of insanity, I suggested that we could make something with the 3D printer that he might like better. He accepted the proposal enthusiastically and of course, when asked what he wanted, he replied: “I don't know.”. So I designed bracket for bracket. Honeycombs, circles, squares... even the crazy idea to put LEGO bricks on them (Yes, there is a STL model for LEGO Bricks). After dozens of proposals, I finally found one he liked. So I printed it out and sent it to him.
However, when I came by a few weeks later and wanted to see the results, he still had the originals built in. Why? He thinks the originals are kind of cool now and decided to leave it the way it is … and time has gone by.
A few days ago I decided to sort my print data and then these panels fell on my feet again. Well, before I put them out of frustration, I thought I'd share them with you. Maybe there's someone out there who likes these panels more than my friend.
Models:
These are PCI/PCI Express expansion card covers for PC cases, in 30 different variants. When I assembled the package, I also created low-profile versions of it. There are also small PC cases, so... why not?
Printing:
The models can be printed with the 0.4 mm standard nozzle and without supports. As layer height you can go up to 0.20 mm. You should set the infill to 100%, but since the panel is only about 1 mm thick, I think that is not relevant for most printers anyway.
Filament:
Since these are covers for PC expansion cards, they can also be printed with any filament. Neither temperature nor electrical voltage should be a problem. The PC enclosure is grounded and most of it - apart from the power supply - runs at safe voltage and a housing temperature of more than 50 ° C usually means the threatening exodus of your PC.
Assembly:
Well … Ask your IT or your computer expert of trust about risks and side effects.
