In early spring of 2023, I built a small Indy / Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar themed bar in our basement storage area /unfinished game room. As of mid-April 2023 I started to ask around on the internet looking for a Dial of Destiny / Archimedes Antikythera Mechanism to put with some other Indy props behind the bar. At the time there wasn't much (anything) available, so I made this.
I'm an R&D engineer (mostly software but some hardware repair and design) but pretty novice in 3d-modeling. I did, however, capture screen recordings of the majority of the creation process in Shapr3D and through a number of stream-of-consciousness forum posts.

Mark4
I've successfully printed all sizes on both FDM and Resin-FDM combination. I will say that the smaller builds are far more conducive to Resin prints. Plus, the resin prints just feel more realistic.
Multi Color Parts Handling
For the multi-color parts, save yourself some headache and try to use Bambu Studio Multi Plate project that corresponding build size you are working on. If you have access to a Bambu AMS printer those are going to be a lot easier.
For those printing out of single material printers, I've separated those parts into parts that can be sandwiched in your slicer of choice.
[PartName]_Plain will go on your build plate
[PartName]_Cutouts will be stacked on top of the above model.
You can: Pause, monitor your progress and swap filaments mid-print. -or- print them separately and use transfer type (like for vinyl lettering) to remove the cutouts and glue them to plain portion.
Sizes
As far as I can tell there were multiple sizes used in the film. A hero prop for establishing shots and some scenes were one half of the dial is shown without the other half. An action prop that once assembled can be handled by the team during action scenes and fits well into the messenger bag. A similarly sized acrylic clear dial with motors, gears and moving hands that had details composited in post-production.
200mm was the first build size that I ever tried.
- this should be about the size to the “Den of Destiny” prop at Disney World
205mm is my preferred build size
- based on photogrammetry this should be about the size as seen on screen when the Dial is assembled and used in action scenes.
210mm provided by request.
248mm is the largest build you can print on a 256mm build plate
- based on photogrammetry this should be about the size of the hero / basis prop shown at the film premieres and red carpet events.
-Easiest build size for Bambu FDM and yes I'm aware it isn't “exactly” 248mm.
Print Instructions
Print the parts in order from the Mark4-[size] folder corresponding to your desired build size.
(or use the multi-plate projects provided)
For FDM, I usually printed Side A and Side B at 60% infill. The rest I printed with 100% infill. For FDM, printing with a matte filament helps to hide layer lines. I had great luck with both Hatchbox and Bambu Matte filaments. Printing with a low temp meta filament can ease support scarring.
Print the white parts in a silk white filament and add a pause point in the slicer around 80% complete.
For Resin, I usually printed standard resin dials with Sunlu Standard Plus resin. These turn out really nice and have a realistic feel.
The super-premium dials that I'm metal-plating were printed in in a 2:1 mixture of Sirayatech Blu and Build resins so that I could drill hang-jigs for the bath plating processes. I'm still refining this technique because it is highly labor intensive and requires a small fortune in plating electrolytes.

December 2023: Getting Pulled Back In
I thought I was done! (again). I guess not! (Again)
Social Media. I should stay off of it. Around early December on one typical four-espresso morning waiting on a meeting, my phone vibrated with a social media message from across the Pond. Summarized as follows:
”I’m in [exotic place] (by standards of South Alabama, anyway) I’d like one of your props.. but there are two issues I’m concerned about. Layer Lines and Support Scars. “
In my little mental red flag push-pin map of places that I’d sent Dials, this particular locale spoke to me. I’m being vague here… on purpose. Just to highlight the innovation-motivation without calling attention to an individual in the Indy prop communities.
I know that I could make a Dial without layer lines and without support scars, I made plenty of them but it was hard work; a lot of sanding and post-processing of the parts, which drove the time (and price) up. But, since I took a break over the fall from making Dials, a few things were on my mind that could be improved.
The Mark 5 box is fully compatible with Mark 4. The primary difference is the Mark 5 box adds the corner ripples, which are best produced with Resin printers but could be feasible on FDM, especially at the large size.
Another difference in Mark 5 is that there is an option / alternate compass with a slightly modified mount to add placement flexibility and reduce the risk of eyepiece breaks while unscrewing the mount.

Finishing Tips
Gold Parts:
Sand off support scars
Prime in Flat Black
Using Krylon Golf Leaf (in an air brush or rattle can) lightly overspray the gold parts so that the gold flakes fall onto the parts. Do light coats and let some of the black primer show through. This gives it an aged metal look.
White Parts:
Use silk white filament and Stop the print at 85%. (I add a pause in the slice-preview slider)
The directionality of the silk adds a pearlescent effect. I've also been known to lightly dust these parts in an skateboard sparkle through an overspray method similar to the above gold-leaf.
Mark 42
The place in which I left this project didn't sit right with me. The center-plug design was useful for making the earlier builds accessible to entry-level FDM printers and effectively made parts of those Dials modular. The center-plug design was also a point of inaccuracy that bugged me.

In the coming weeks I'll work on providing better instructions.
The Mark42 build aims to more closely match the hero prop made for the film, especially in the way in which the two halves of the Dial separate and interlace with one another. I quickly found that in order to accommodate that vertical spacing, my original designs needed a significant rework.
So, Mark42 parts are not backward compatible to Mark5. Sorry. It related to the fact that the earlier builds had the wrong angles for the glyph bowl; those changes necessarily cascade to other parts of the model layout.
In some ways Mark42 is simpler than earlier builds in terms of fewer parts. In other ways, it is more demanding in that you it requires large-format resin printing capabilities. I suppose you “could” chop it up and fit on a smaller printer but just thinking about the seam post-processing is giving me nervous twitches.

FAQ
Q: Can you build me one of these?
A: Building one of these can be a gratifying project and isn't extremely difficult just a little time consuming. Still, if you aren't inclined or equipped to do so, I understand. There is an order page on my blog. Typical turnaround time is 2 weeks and the price is admittedly kind of high in order to keep requests from overwhelming me and in account of my own OCD regarding commissioned work. My leftovers, 2nd quality and sizing experiments often find themselves on eBay with lots of pictures. There are quite a few 3rd party builds on eBay too.
Q: Can you make the white parts for me?
A: Sure. For twenty-five USD plus shipping for the front and back glyph rings, middle glyph ring and white disc. I can usually get the white parts out within a few days. I'll set up an order page one of these days for this but just private message me for now if you need this.
Q: Do you ever give Dials away?
A: Very frequently. If you have a kharma positive use for one of these - Let me know!
