Assembling the Meshenger device requires patience, attention to detail, appropriate equipment/skills/experience with soldering wires, installing components on circuit boards, and safely handling batteries. Set aside a few hours for assembly.

There is a detailed step-by-step assembly guide and bill of materials (BOM) provided under the ‘Other Files’ section. I encourage DIY builders to carefully follow each step; it should be relatively easy to follow the assembly process. If you get stuck, double check the assembly guide to ensure you did not skip a step or perform a specific required action.

There are some parts not easily produced, such as the laser-cut acrylic panels but they can be purchased from my Etsy store or sourced locally by you; the required SVG files are provided here. These parts are not optional.

In addition to the common files required I have included:

Case bottom models to fit RAK19007 and RAK5005, as well as variants that omit the user button and/or GPS cutoff switch if those are not required (those buttons are highly recommended)
Screen insert variants for both 1.3" and 0.96" OLED screens
Multiple pattern design choices for screen inserts, including blank for customization
Desktop stand and wall mount
SVG files for laser engraving & cutting the required acrylic panels

How to use Meshenger:

Power on: Press the user button (left side of device) to power on Meshenger. If powered off, it will also power on when a USB cable is inserted.

Keyboard: Type and press enter to send a message to all nodes in the mesh network ('Broadcast'). Press the TAB key to enter DM (direct message) mode, then press right and left arrow keys to select a node; start typing and press the Enter key to send a DM to that node. Press ESC to cancel.

User button (left side of device): Press once to flip through screen info (or press the enter key on the keyboard for the same function); press and hold the user button until the screen shows 'Shutting down'. During shutdown/deep sleep very little battery is used, approximately 1/10th as much when it's awake. Press the user button again to wake it up.

GPS switch (left side of device): Slide toward the 'GPS' text to enable GPS, slide away to cut power off to the module to gain 3-5x battery runtime. When turned on again the screen may not reflect that the GPS is enabled for up to 15 minutes but it's working. If you reset the device using the reset button (right side, next to the USB port) it will then reflect 'No GPS module' until you enable the GPS using the slide switch. When the GPS switch is flipped back to on, this will make the screen immediately show 'No sats' (GPS enabled but no satellites acquired yet) for a few minutes until GPS satellite lock is acquired.

Reset button (right side of device, next to USB port): Use to reset the device if needed, and to initiate bootloader mode for firmware updates.

Firmware update: Connect the USB cable to the device, then to your computer. Double-tap the reset button (green LED should slowly fade in & out); a removable drive called RAK4631 should appear on your computer. Copy the desired .uf2 firmware file to the RAK4631 drive (do NOT use the firmware with ‘e-ink’ in the filename). The Meshenger will reboot when firmware update is complete. If any firmware fails to copy or flash, attempt update again.
