Auxetic Lattice (Antichiral Hexagons)

This lattice is auxetic, meaning it has a negative Poisson's ratio. Unlike most materials, where compression in one direction makes them expand in the other, this lattice wants to compress or expand in both directions at once.

The design is based on a tesselating hexagonal grid, with the straight edges replaced by arcs. Adjacent vertices twist in opposite directions when compressed, so this is called an antichiral lattice.

As auxetic structures can expand and contract, they can flex and conform to curved surfaces. This is used in high-end running shoes and medical applications where they can maintain their structure whilst flexing with the movement of the body.
