Spiral earrings

This is my collection of 3D printable earrings.

The entire project has started as research into capabilities of my Prusa MK3S. I wanted to know how precise it is, how big overhangs I can print and so on. So I generated one type of earrings, "twist1", and then, well, just continued playing with them :) They can all be printed on a FDM machine, but may look even better if printed on a SLA printer.

All earrings are fully parametric. They are created from an OpenSCAD script "spirals.scad" (attached). In addition, you will also need my set of OpenSCAD libraries, available for download at https://github.com/gabr42/3D/tree/master/lib.

Entire project is available on GitHub at https://github.com/gabr42/3D/tree/master/earrings.

This collection contains seven earring models: twist1, twist1_lp, twisty4, twisty5, twisty6, tree1, and tree2.

To generate one mode, open spirals.scad script in OpenSCAD, uncomment appropriate "make = ..." declaration near the beginning of the script, press F5 for a preview, F6 to render the result, and F7 to create an .STL file. Or you can use make_earrings.bat script (https://github.com/gabr42/3D/blob/master/earrings/make_earrings.bat) to regenerate all files.

Each earring is generated only in one version (left/right). Select it in PrusaSlicer, right-click and choose "Mirror, Allong X axis" to create a second earring of a pair.

Don't forget that you can later adjust earring dimensions in the slicer and further customize them in that way.

Some earrings are composed of multiple parts. You can create parts separately in OpenSCAD (for example, define 'make = "tree2a"' instead of 'make = "tree2"') or with the make_earrings script.

Multi-material printing can waste lots of material on the wipe tower so I have included small script "wipe_object_generator.scad" which generates a square or round vase with specified dimensions. You can set it as a "wipe object" and the use it as a storage for earrings - or for anything else.

Three 3mf files are attached:

  1. earrings-vase: Contains earrings that can be printed in "vase" mode.

  2. earrings-spiral: Contains all earrings.

  3. earrings-mm: Contains multi-part earrings, each split in parts.

To finish an earring, you have two options;

  1. Drill through the earring near the top and pull through a simple wire hanger (you can get it at a local hobby art store).

  2. Super-glue a cap on the top (hobby art store will sell you those, too; or get them in bulk at a friendly chinese supplier).

See the images for more ideas.

Print instructions

Most of the earrings require brim because the contact surface is quite small.

Some earrings may print better with supports. As a suggestion, earrings-spiral.3mf contains hand-made support structure for "twisty5" earrings (put together entirely in PrusaSlicer).

If you are printing in a single material, I'm suggesting printing earrings one by one. This makes for a better print and reduces stringing. Alternatively, space them far apart on the plate and use "Output options, Complete individual objects".

Use shiny or translucent filaments, they create the most effective result.
